NORTHERN DISTRIBUTION NETWORK
Growing Importance of the Northern Distribution
Network
With the US — led Coalition in Afghanistan facing growing difficulty using its main logistical supply route through Pakistan, the alliance has begun to increase its reliance on alternative supply routes into Afghanistan, with the Northern Distribution Network (NDN)—a network of road, rail and air routes through Russia and Central Asia, now serving as the primary back-up.
Within the NDN—Uzbekistan plays a key strategic role given its infrastructure, central location, and direct access into northern Afghanistan. In addition to the growing use of Uzbekistan’s rail and road facilities, the NDN envisions greater use of the Navoi airport given its up-graded facilities and the involvement of Hanjin-Korean Airlines.
In addition to its role within the NDN, Uzbekistan is making a strong commitment to regional economic cooperation by linking its rail network to Afghanistan and by exporting electricity to Kabul. The railway line will bring cargo from the Termez- Hairatan border to Mazar-e-Sharif, Afghanistan’s second largest city.
In connection with the development of the Northern Development Networks there are opportunities for local producers to supply goods and services to Afghanistan.
Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) and General Services Administration (GSA) provided AmCham lists of commodities (below) they seek to procure locally.
If you are local producer and can offer goods and services as per the lists of commodities please send information that will include name of the company, contact information and product (from lists) you produce locally to AmCham office at amcham.director@amcham.uz or amcham.assistant@amcham.uz
