Biography – Frederick Darby
Frederick Darby is the country director for Rio Tinto Group in Uzbekistan, a leading international mining group. Before joining Rio Tinto, Darby operated his own company in Tashkent, Amir-Mineral MChJ, which successfully originated projects for Rio Tinto. Darby formed the team of full-time professionals that has now transferred to Rio Tinto.
Darby is an Australian citizen and has lived in Tashkent with his family for eight years. He previously led professional teams based in Moscow and Tashkent as the director and head of corporate finance for Central Asia and the Caucasus region at a large, international consulting firm.
In Australia Darby was employed as a corporate finance advisor in a private Australian investment bank and at a well-regarded stock brokerage firm. As a solicitor, Darby practiced in a leading Sydney, Australia law firm in the field of international taxation and mergers and acquisitions, acting for natural resources companies.
Darby’s corporate finance advisory work has included executing numerous placements and underwritings in the Australian small-capitalization mining sector, sale of a large coal mine, privatization and financing of the Armenian mining, metallurgical and aviation industries together with numerous due-diligence, prospectus preparation and structuring assignments.
For three years Darby was the general director in Uzbekistan for a prominent Australian investment group interested in a large gold project. In 2008 he was the director of investments of a Singaporean group that managed investment funds across Central Asia and in Mongolia.
Darby holds a Bachelor of Commerce (finance) degree and a Bachelor of Law degree from the University of New South Wales. He has also undertaken post-graduate studies in mineral economics and mineral investment analysis.
A native-English speaker, Darby also possesses a reasonable competency in Russian.
