AmCham is excited to announce the launch of a new committee - the AmCham Corporate & Social Responsibility Committee (CSR). The committee chairwoman is Ludmilla Park from PricewaterhouseCoopers.
The CSR committee was created for a specific purpose and a particular vision. One, as business leaders we recognize that there is more to running a successful business than just turning a profit in our given markets. Secondly, we recognize that we have a commitment and responsibility to the community in which we live and work.
The Purpose
The main objective of the CSR Committee is to foster an attitude among AmCham members in which we feel a responsibility for the different needs of others and not just remain focused on our own business needs and performance. Why is this important for us? If we, as business leaders, can demonstrate clear concern and leadership in the area of corporate and social responsibility, we can be a part of something much larger than the sum of our individual businesses. We can be part of changing the world.
The CSR Committee will focus its activities in two main areas:
• Leadership in Education - provide opportunities for business lectures and seminars for young adults, university students and young people interested in advancing their business potential. Will also focus on promoting internships within AmCham businesses for young entrepreneurs.
• Leadership in Caring - provide volunteer opportunities for AmCham members to help children, orphans, disabled people, and families in need; support projects sponsored by AmCham members through donations and corporate sponsorship; and sponsor community events for the target groups listed above.
Many AmCham members are already involved in many social initiatives and activities, either individually or through their businesses. With this in mind, we hope those members can join their energy and resources through the CSR. Where there is a need for extra financial support or just for an extra pair of hands, we can work together.
If you or your business share AmCham’s views on corporate responsibility please join the CSR committee and help we form the future of a better world.
The Project
The CSR Committee has already started its first initiative - a project to build 20 new bunk beds for children at a local orphanage. The cost of each new bed is $250 and includes a mattress and mattress covering. Several AmCham members and member companies have already joined this project. Among them are the following:
• PricewaterhouseCoopers
• Uz-Texaco
• SEAF-SME Investment Management
• AKTE LLC
So far we have enough funds to construct six bunk bed sets.
If your business would like to sponsor a bunk bed, please contact Ludmilla Park, CSR Committee Chairwoman, or the AmCham office.
These larger beds will accommodate 40 children who are outgrowing their current beds. Local seamstresses have also agreed to sew new pillow shams and blanket covers for each bed.
The Plan
The CSR Committee held its first meeting in February. Additional meetings and activities will be announced through AmCham updates and “Business Connections.” If you would like to join the CSR Committee and help organize future projects and initiatives, please contact Park at 120-6101.
